Didier Drogba is an Ivorian footballer who also holds a French nationality. He played for the first time with the Cote d’Ivoire football squad in September 2002 against South Africa. He was the team captain of “The Elephants” (the Cote d’Ivoire national team) during the 2006 World Cup.

Al-Ahly (Cairo, Egypt)
Al Ahly, which means “The National” in Arabic, is the most popular club of in Egyptian football. With 35 Egyptian Premier League championships and six CAF Champions League titles between 1948 and 2010, Al-Ahly is the most successful football club in Africa. It was declared “African Club of the 20th Century” in 2000 by the Confederation of African Football.

The Cameroonian Samuel Eto’o
Samuel Eto’o is the top goal-scorer in the history of the African Cup of Nations with 16. He surpassed the previous record of 14, held by Ivorian Laurent Pokou, in 2008 when he finished the tournament as top-scorer with five goals. Unfortunately, the Cameroonian football team lost the final to Egypt 0-1.

Kuffour joined AS Roma after eleven seasons and 175 games in German topflight league Bundesliga. He signed for three seasons with the famous Italian football club but played only for the 2005-06 season. He was loaned to Livorno and Ajax Amsterdam the two following seasons.
After five years with French Ligue 1 team AS Monaco, Nonda agreed to sign a contract with AS Roma for three seasons. But his first season was made difficult by a knee injury and was sent on loan to Blackburn Rovers in the season that followed.

24 (Cote d’Ivoire won 11-10)
Côte d'Ivoire first rose to prominence in 1992 when it won the African Cup of Nations over Ghana. Held in Senegal, the game was still tied 0-0 after extra time and so the game was sent to one of the longest penalty shootout in football history. It took 24 penalty shots to decide the winner between the two teams. The game was decided in an 11-10 score, with the Ivorian goalkeeper Alain Gouamene emerging as hero after blocking Ghana’s final attempt.

Tunisian football league
Etoile Sportive du Sahel (ESS) is a Tunisian football club founded on May 11, 1925. Its stadium is located in the northern district of Sousse, the third-largest city of Tunisia. Its colors are red and white and its supporters are called El Hamra (“the red” in Arabic). Etoile’s successful club record includes three African Champions League titles, which they won in 1993, 1995, and 2005.

The neophyte Tunisians set a record in the 1978 Football World Cup as the first African team to win a game in the tournament by beating Mexico 3-1. They were eliminated during the group stage after a 0-1 defeat against Poland and a 0-0 draw with defending champions Germany.

The Liberian George Weah in 1995
George Weah became the first non-European player to win the Ballon d’Or in 1995. Earlier that year, the awarding rules were changed to allow non-European footballers to be eligible for the award. He played for AC Milan when he won the prestigious Ballon d’Or and is so far the only African to have received the honor.
